As we traveled through New Hampshire (all 30 miles of it) we were amazed at all the colors, and then we topped a hill, and then ^ happened. We hit it at just the right moment as the sun was shining at just the right places. It was a nice surprise as we made our 45 minute drive through the state of New Hampshire.
Maine!!
The motto for on this welcome sign for Maine is "Open For Business." REALLY?? Is this a joke? With a gorgeous state as Maine, this is what they came up with?
Oh well, we were glad they weren't closed, so there ya go. Maybe they are making sure that even though, in general many towns in Maine roll up their streets at 8:00 pm., the State remains open. Even the Walmarts, including Super Walmarts, do not stay open 24 hours a day (unheard of in this day and time), but refreshing to see.
Our first night in Maine brought us to the White Mountains off US Hwy 2, onto Hwy. 113. Anthony had found a campsite six miles down this road and once again, it was pitch black and quiet. We had no cell service and no other campers near us, so I enjoyed the magazines my friend Deb gave me before we fell asleep at about 8:30.
One of the fun bonuses of traveling around is getting to enjoy a cup of coffee with the locals.
^ they are still holding out hope for Bernie. Just an observation, since I am mentioning Bernie, we have seen 100's of signs for Trump and just a few for Clinton. We just thought that was interesting.
This cute pup reminded us of our neighbor's cute pup, Rocky, so I had to take a picture of him. This was right before he got up and headed straight for my plate of food, lol.
We haven't mentioned much about Moose in this journey, because of the frustration in the past about not seeing a single one anywhere in our travels, even in the places where it was a sure thing, like Yellowstone National Park. But believe me that has been a huge topic of conversation. Anthony wanted to detour to an area that we thought were sure bets of seeing a moose. We passed through the area of Moose River and Moosehead, and he even found a campsite at Jewett Cove on the banks of Moosehead Lake. We drove five miles on a dirt road to get to the campsite and saw hardly anyone on the way out there. We thought, YES, THIS IS THE DAY WE WILL SEE A MOOSE!!!
We even had moose hunters parked right beside us. (Yes, moose hunters!!!) Here is what the campsite looked like.
One of the campers said he had seen moose walk right through this campsite one year when he had camped there before, and we told the moose hunters that if one walked through that night to please wake us up so we can see it before they do what they were going to do. Honestly, I don't think I had even thought about people hunting moose for meat. We asked him if the meat tasted like venison, and he said it was more like horse meat. (Wow, well I asked).
Bottom line - no moose sightings for us. Bummer. I think we are moose repellents.
We went through a town that I believe I had heard of through Late Night With David Letterman. On the Nielson ratings, it showed that no one watched his show from this town, so he would just randomly call some of the residents here out of the phone book.
We finally made our way to Bar Harbor.
I also ate Maine lobster at Helen's restaurant in Ellsworth. (I got the Lazy Lobster and didn't have to pick out the meat.)
Today we are excited to be able to visit Dean, a bike riding buddy of Anthony's, who lives in Bar Harbor.
Is that a roll Anthony is holding? It is as big as his head!! Looks like you guys are having a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteThose were the loaves of bread that each table is supposed to share. With me being gluten free, he gets to enjoy the whole thing. That's one of the benefits of having a spouse that's gf, lol.
